One afternoon during SWAN’s Rising Stars Summer Music Camp, our students had the opportunity to share music, laughter, and friendship with the residents of Evergreen Estates Retirement Community.
Our students arrived ready to perform, and they quickly filled the room with energy. They sang, danced, and played their instruments while the residents cheered them on. Smiles spread throughout the room as everyone enjoyed the music together.
But the most meaningful part of the visit came after the performance.
Rather than simply packing up and leaving, our students went around the room introducing themselves to the residents and giving them handmade cards they had created.
One student shared:
“The lady I spoke with and gave my card to told me I reminded her of her granddaughter. She said she missed her and thanked us for coming and that we did a great job.”
That simple conversation captures what made the visit so special. Our students weren’t just performing for an audience; they were connecting with people, listening to their stories, and bringing encouragement and joy.
Before heading back to camp, there was still a little time for one more activity. Students, teachers, and even our Program Director, Ms. Beazley, shared one of the students’ favorite music games from camp. The residents watched and enjoyed the fun as the students and staff laughed, played, and made one more memory together.
For our students, this was more than another performance. It was an opportunity to experience the joy of using their gifts to bring joy to someone else.
We are grateful to Evergreen Estates for welcoming our students and giving them the opportunity to share their music and their hearts with the community.
Sometimes the most meaningful performances aren’t about the applause; they’re about the connections made afterward.
