The High Foundation awarded SWAN $15,000 to support the “Rising Stars” Music/Mental Health Program! This extended after-school session began in January 2024 and runs once weekly from 3:15 to 6:00 at Burrowes Elementary School. It serves ten children, all of whom have experienced a parent’s incarceration and the resulting trauma. The grant will also support our full-day, five-week summer session from June 24 to July 25.
Within the first months of its operation, we have already noticed its impact. Students are experiencing a healthy and effective after-school schedule with snacks, homework help, one-on-one and group music classes, art, character development, and social-emotional counseling, all with caring and trusted teachers.
Instructor Janet Rawleigh says, “I have seen how the personal attention and one-on-one time in SWAN’s music class has made all the difference. A boy who was not compliant in class and never sang now looks forward to coming and encourages other students to participate.”
The High Foundation Team, eager to witness the progress of our students, plans to visit classes this summer. This visit will not only allow our students to perform for them and express their gratitude but also provide an opportunity for them to meet the members of the High Foundation Team, who have been instrumental in making this program a reality.
