Beyond the Music: The Lasting Impact of SWAN
Some of the most meaningful reminders of SWAN’s impact come when we least expect them: in school hallways, classrooms, and everyday conversations.
Recently, several SWAN mental health counselors who also serve as school social workers in the School District of Lancaster (SDoL) shared heartwarming stories about students who continue to greet them with hugs and excitedly recall their favorite experiences from SWAN’s Summer Music Camp.
One counselor shared that whenever a particular student sees her, he enthusiastically says, “Remember when we did this at SWAN…” before showing her part of a dance routine he learned at camp.
These moments may seem small, but they speak volumes. Our students aren’t simply remembering activities. They’re remembering relationships, joyful experiences, and a place where they felt encouraged, valued, and connected.
Growth That Others Can See
And those lasting impressions extend beyond summer camp.
An SDoL music teacher who recently attended a SWAN performance to support students from her school shared how children who have participated in SWAN’s programs over the years regularly talk with excitement about their experiences and proudly demonstrate what they’re learning.
She offered this encouragement:
“I have seen these students grow and develop confidence and a deeper understanding of what it means to work as a team. You are doing great work!”
What a meaningful affirmation of the time, care, and encouragement invested in these children!

A Desire to Keep Learning
We’re also hearing from students who aren’t currently able to attend our Rising Stars After-School Program at Burrowes Elementary. They’re eagerly asking when they can begin music lessons again.
Our Rising Stars Director, Janet Rawleigh, is actively exploring ways to provide these opportunities within our current budget and program capacity.
The desire to participate is there. We want to make sure the opportunities are, too.
For children impacted by parental incarceration, consistent relationships, meaningful experiences, and opportunities to succeed can make a lasting difference.
At SWAN, our hope is that every child carries more than musical skills away from our programs. We want them to carry confidence, joyful memories, lasting connections, and the knowledge that they are valued and loved.
Because the impact of SWAN reaches far beyond the music.
