After suffering the traumatic loss of his father, a young boy went to live with his grandmother. She said he was angry and stopped talking for several years. “Whenever we spoke to him, it was like war.” When she signed him up for SWAN music classes, she said, “He became like a new person.” The musical experiences took away his anger, and he started talking again. He would come home from class and play different chords for his grandmother and ask her if she could hear the difference between them.

Later, he heard some bad news that put him in panic mode. He decided to drum the rhythms learned in SWAN class and said, “It worked! I drummed, and I felt calm again.”

Thank you for caring and for investing in our students’ lives!
