At SWAN, we often say that music is more than just a subject; it’s a lifeline. A way for students to heal, grow, and discover their voice. Recently, that message came to life in a powerful and personal way through a new composition, “Our SWAN Journey,” by one of our very own: Mr. Allan Dutton.
Mr. Allan, a dedicated SWAN music teacher and gifted composer, surprised our students with a song he wrote especially for them. From the first few notes, it was clear this was no ordinary piece. This was a heartfelt anthem written with the students in mind, one that captures the spirit of SWAN and the strength found in unity.
The lyrics say it all:
Climbing together
Helping each other up
Making it better
Stronger as part of us
So take my hand
Stand with me
We will rise with possibility
As the students listened and began to learn the song, something beautiful unfolded. They were deeply impressed that Mr. Allan had written it himself; many hadn’t realized that the person who guided them through scales and chord progressions was also a composer with a powerful creative voice. Their respect and admiration grew, and so did their pride in learning the piece.
In rehearsals, the room buzzed with excitement. Students practiced with intention, not just to get the notes right, but to live out the message of the song. They reflected on what it meant to climb together, to help each other up, and to be stronger as part of us. For many, the lyrics became a mirror, reflecting the encouragement and connection they experience every day through their SWAN community.
The performance of “Our SWAN Journey” wasn’t just a musical moment; it was a celebration of shared purpose and what’s possible when students and mentors, like Mr. Allan, come together with heart, hope, and harmony.
We are so proud of Mr. Allan for sharing his gift, and of our students for embracing it with such enthusiasm and insight. “Our SWAN Journey” will remain a treasured part of our musical journey, a reminder that we rise higher when we rise together.
